Germany's Elmos has introduced a series of solutions based on the E522.90/91/92/93 chip family, specifically designed for automotive taillight LED drivers. Each channel in the E522.9x series supports an output current range from 14mA to 55mA. When connected in parallel, a single chip can deliver up to 165mA. This patented power management chip ensures stable LED performance even under challenging thermal conditions.
The design allows for flexible power allocation through external sampling resistors, enabling proportional power distribution between the external device and the PCB. This helps prevent hotspots on the board, ensuring better thermal management. In this innovative approach, part of the power is dissipated by the chip itself, while the rest is managed externally, which lowers the chip’s temperature and provides more design flexibility for customers.
The E522.9x series also includes comprehensive fault diagnosis features. It can detect open or short circuits in the LED driver, IR configuration faults, internal temperature monitoring, temperature derating, and over-temperature shutdown protection. Additionally, it offers overvoltage detection to safeguard the system and ensure reliable operation.
PWM dimming is supported across all channels or individually, offering greater control over lighting effects. The "RUN" diagnostic interface supports multiple LED cascading configurations, allowing for high-current applications and advanced features like dynamic flow effects when multiple chips are used together.
This chip family is fully compatible with the E522.80–83 series, which operates from 48mA to 151mA, enabling direct replacement and cascading for enhanced functionality.
The E522.9x series offers two configurable fault handling modes: "fault feedback mode," where a faulty channel is turned off and a single fault signal is generated, and "single-light mode," where all connected LEDs are treated as one source. If an error occurs, all channels are disabled, and the chip draws only a low standby current, making it easier for the power supply control unit to detect the issue clearly.
