Germany's Elmos has introduced a range of solutions based on the E522.90/91/92/93 series of chips, specifically designed for automotive taillight LED drivers. Each channel in the E522.9x series supports an output current range from 14mA to 55mA. When connected in parallel, a single chip can deliver up to 165mA. This patented power management chip ensures stable LED performance even under challenging thermal conditions. The design allows for flexible power distribution through external sampling resistors, enabling proportional power allocation between the chip, external components, and the PCB. This helps prevent hotspots on the board, improving overall reliability.
In this innovative solution, part of the power is dissipated by the chip itself, while the rest is managed by external devices. This approach reduces the chip’s temperature rise, providing more design flexibility for customers. Additionally, the chip includes multiple fault diagnostic features, such as detecting open or short circuits in the LED driver, IR configuration issues, built-in temperature sensing, temperature derating, and over-temperature shutdown protection. It also monitors for overvoltage conditions, ensuring system stability and safety.
The E522.9x series supports PWM dimming for both individual and all channels. The "RUN" diagnostic interface allows for cascading multiple LEDs in different configurations, enabling advanced lighting effects like dynamic flow patterns. The chip family is fully compatible with the E522.80-83 series, which operates within a current range of 48mA to 151mA, allowing for direct replacement and expanded functionality through cascading.
The chip offers two configurable fault handling modes: "fault feedback mode," where a failed channel is turned off and a fault signal is generated, and "single-light mode," where all connected LED phases are treated as one source. In case of a fault, all channels are disabled, drawing only a low standby current, making it easier for the power supply control unit to detect and respond to issues.
