Samsung builds up its reputation: making Intel the world's first chip maker

For Intel, the PC processor market is no longer their top priority. After all, it's a declining sector with limited profit potential, which is why they've been pushing hard to make a significant shift toward autonomous driving and other emerging technologies.

According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Electronics is set to overtake Intel in terms of revenue this year, becoming the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. With a 15% market share, Samsung reported revenue of $65.6 billion this year, compared to Intel’s $61 billion. Last year, Samsung had already made a strong showing with $44.3 billion in revenue, signaling a clear upward trend.

This development is a major blow to Intel, which has long held the top spot since 1993. While they may be trying to catch up, the gap is growing, and the chances of reclaiming the lead seem slim. The competition is fierce, and companies like Samsung and SK Hynix are investing heavily to maintain their momentum.

This year, Samsung poured $26 billion into its semiconductor manufacturing facilities, accounting for 29% of global industry investment. This trend is expected to continue as the demand for memory chips rises. Meanwhile, SK Hynix is projected to climb to third place, jumping from fifth last year with $26.2 billion in annual revenue. Micron Technology took fourth place with $23.4 billion in sales, while Broadcom and Qualcomm dropped to fifth and sixth, respectively.

The rise of Samsung and SK Hynix can be attributed to the booming global storage semiconductor market. With a surge in demand for server and smartphone memory, the DRAM and NAND flash markets are expected to grow by 55% and 35%, respectively, compared to the previous year. This growth is fueling the expansion of these leading players and reshaping the competitive landscape in the semiconductor industry.
