Toshiba has officially denied reports that it is considering selling its computer business to save itself from financial difficulties. The company has made it clear that no such deal is currently in the works.
Recently, some media outlets reported that Toshiba, a Japanese electronics giant, was in talks with Asus of Taiwan to sell its personal computer (PC) business. The report also mentioned that Lenovo had shown interest in acquiring parts of Toshiba’s PC division. However, these claims have not been confirmed by Toshiba.
In response to these rumors, Toshiba issued an official statement clarifying that the reports—published by Kyodo News on November 16 and Japan Economic News and Tokyo News on November 17—were false. According to the statement, there is no agreement in place between Toshiba and any company regarding the sale of its computer business. The company has not made any decisions about selling this part of its operations.
The confusion around Toshiba's potential sale likely stems from its ongoing financial struggles. The company is under pressure to raise capital to settle debts accumulated from the bankruptcy of its U.S. subsidiary, Westinghouse Electric. To address this, Toshiba has already announced plans to sell its television business to China’s Hisense Group. Additionally, it is actively negotiating the sale of its semiconductor business with a consortium led by Bain Capital, with an expected agreement by March next year.
Westinghouse has also been receiving bids from private equity firms like Blackstone Group and Apollo Global Management. These moves are all part of Toshiba’s broader strategy to avoid delisting from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Interestingly, Chinese companies have been increasingly interested in acquiring Japanese tech firms. In 2016, NEC sold most of its PC joint venture shares to Lenovo. More recently, in November of this year, Lenovo announced its plan to take over Fujitsu’s PC business, another long-standing Japanese manufacturer.
As Toshiba continues to restructure its operations, the question of whether it will eventually sell its PC division remains open. But for now, the company is focused on stabilizing its financial position and avoiding further losses.
