Wu He, director of the joint laboratory, explained that the AI did not rely on memorization alone but was specifically designed for medical exams. It demonstrated multi-level reasoning skills, analyzing words, sentences, and paragraphs to support doctors in improving diagnostic accuracy and reducing treatment time. The robot participated in the 2017 national clinical practitioners' written exam, which lasted 150 minutes per session. However, "Xiao Medical" completed each test in under 20 minutes, with an average time of just 15 minutes and 8 seconds. The entire process was supervised and notarized by the Beijing Guoxin Notary Office, ensuring fairness and transparency. This was a historic moment, as it marked the first time an AI system took part in a national professional qualification exam alongside human candidates. The test included both knowledge-based and case-based questions, with over 50% of the content requiring critical thinking rather than simple recall. The project took nine months to develop, starting from the establishment of the research team in February 2017. The team worked on building a vast medical knowledge base, including textbooks, clinical guides, and real-world medical records. Through continuous iterations and improvements, the AI achieved remarkable results. Despite initial challenges, such as understanding complex medical data and making accurate diagnoses, the team developed innovative methods like "semantic tensor" and "keypoint semantic reasoning" to enhance the AI's ability to analyze and interpret medical information. The developers emphasized that AI is not meant to replace doctors but to assist them. Tao Xiaodong, a project leader, stated that while AI can handle routine tasks and provide preliminary insights, it cannot fully substitute for human judgment in complex medical situations. Looking ahead, the "Chili Medical Assistant" will be deployed nationwide in March next year, focusing on medical education, training, and clinical support. It aims to reduce the workload of doctors by handling repetitive tasks, such as reviewing medical records, and offering recommendations based on its analysis.
