In recent years, medical robots have become a common feature in the healthcare sector. Among them, the Da Vinci surgical system stands out as a widely used general-purpose robot in clinical settings. With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence today, medical robots are expected to become the next major growth area in the healthcare industry.
One notable example is "Xiao Medical," officially known as "Chili Medical Assistant." Developed by the Tsinghua-Xinfei Joint Laboratory, this AI-powered robot recently passed the 2017 National Clinical Practitioners' Written Exam with impressive results. The test, which lasted 150 minutes, saw the robot complete it in just over 15 minutes on average, scoring 456 points—placing it among the top candidates nationwide.
The exam was conducted under strict supervision, with the robot's performance notarized by the Beijing Guoxin Notary Office. This marked the first time an AI system participated in a national-level medical certification exam alongside human candidates. Wu He, director of the joint laboratory, emphasized that the robot's success was not due to rote memorization but rather its ability to reason and analyze complex medical scenarios.
The development of "Xiao Medical" took nearly nine months. During this time, the team worked on building a massive knowledge base, including millions of medical records, textbooks, and research papers. Through advanced algorithms like semantic tensor mapping and keypoint reasoning, the robot was trained to understand and apply medical knowledge effectively.
Despite its achievements, the robot is not intended to replace doctors. Instead, it aims to assist in diagnosis and treatment, helping improve accuracy and efficiency. It will be used in medical education, training, and clinical support, taking on tasks such as analyzing patient records and offering preliminary diagnostic suggestions.
Looking ahead, the "Chili Medical Assistant" is set for nationwide deployment in March 2024. While it has passed the written exam, it still needs to complete practical skills assessments to obtain a full medical license. The goal remains clear: to support, not replace, human doctors in their critical work.
