TE Connectivity has introduced a groundbreaking solution for circuit protection in sensitive electronics: the 2Pro AC device. This innovative hybrid component is designed to protect downstream electronics from damage caused by overcurrent and overvoltage events, which can lead to system resets or permanent failures. By combining a polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) device with a thermally enhanced metal-oxide varistor (MOV) in a single package, the 2Pro AC offers improved reliability, reduced component count, and simplified design processes. It’s particularly well-suited for low-current applications like LED lighting, smart meters, household appliances, and power supplies.

The 2Pro AC’s hybrid design brings significant advantages over traditional methods. Unlike fused MOVs that require replacement after a surge, or separate PPTC and MOV configurations that may cause thermal instability, the 2Pro AC uses a thermally coupled setup. This ensures the varistor surface stays below 150°C, preventing thermal runaway while allowing for easy reset after an event. The device also eliminates the need for one-time-use thermal fuses, offering a more sustainable and efficient protection solution.

The 2Pro AC addresses this challenge by providing a compact, reliable, and user-friendly protection solution that outperforms traditional discrete methods.”

The 2Pro AC is compliant with key industry standards such as EC61000-4-5 and IEC60950, making it easier for manufacturers to meet safety requirements and streamline UL60950 testing. Additionally, it meets RoHS regulations and is free from halogens, ensuring environmental compliance and long-term sustainability.
