Location: Rehabilitation Oasis on the Desert
The new MD Anderson Cancer Center is located on the Banner Gateway Medical Center campus and features state-of-the-art medical equipment.
In 76 rooms, more than 300 staff members are dedicated to cancer treatment. The 133,000-square-foot facility is designed to provide patients with personalized, comprehensive treatment. The three-story cancer center houses medical clinics, medical imaging, radiation oncology, perfusion therapy, and other major patient care services.

The metal construction is about 30 by 30 feet in size and is designed with green leaves and branches to symbolize the healing power of the tree.
During the day, patients and visitors can relax on the balconies on the second and third floors, soak up the sun, and the siding in the tall buildings serves to isolate the sun. At night, customers want to create a more inspiring experience through the look of tall buildings, illuminated with a flame that represents eternity. The eternal flame is a symbol of endurance and hope, both universal and popular.
Challenge: Turning tall buildings into lighthouses at night
The goal of the lighting designer was to design this tall, metal-built building into an inspiring beacon. When the sun goes down, the lighthouse shows the rehabilitation and hope to the patients and staff.
The design concept of the project itself has been conceptualized before the customer decides to illuminate this symbolic high-rise. However, as the design progressed, the image of the tall building as a lantern became more and more clear, so the concept of "the lantern of hope" came to life.
When the final design goal is clear to the brain, the unique construction and natural environment of the building bring countless design challenges and difficulties to this lighting project.
The high temperature and dryness of the desert are the main factors, which requires all materials to be hard enough to withstand large temperature differences and prevent sand intrusion.
The unique construction of the building also poses design and technical obstacles to the installation of the luminaire. The luminaire must be installed in the right position to adjust the correct illumination angle to achieve the desired lighting effect. The lights are hidden inside the grid structure, while each wall panel illuminates the same color of light.
The post-maintenance situation must also be taken into account. A low-cost repair solution and luminaire that is easy to apply when needed is also critical.
The last factor to consider is the dark night sky in Arizona. The lighting design requires a suitable brightness and contrast limit to avoid glare.
