Vice President of DS: Talking about the Future of OLED and 4K TVs

On the CES2012 stage, TV brands such as Samsung and LG have publicly displayed their OLED TVs, and Toshiba and Sharp have all launched 4K×2K Ultra HDTVs. Recently, at the 2012 SID International Symposium, Seminar&Exhibition (Display Week 2012) business conference in Boston, USA, Paul Semenza, Senior Vice President of DisplaySearch, USA, looked into the future of these two technologies.

In 2012, OLED TVs and LCD TVs supporting 4K×2K are about to depart. In OLED TVs, Korea’s LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have announced that they will launch products. According to Semenza's prediction, the price of the two companies' OLED TVs in the third quarter of 2012 was 8,000 US dollars. Since the current price of a 55-inch LCD TV is around 1,000 to 2,000 US dollars, "the price will be more than 4 times higher" (Semenza).

The price of OLED TVs will definitely decline slowly, Semenza said: “The price of the 55-inch models will fall to about US$2,500 by 2014. This price is basically the same as the current high-end LCD TVs of the 55-inch type.” Semenza predicts. The price of a 55-inch LCD TV in 2014 is around US$1,200. By then, the price of OLED TV will be about twice that of LCD TV, and the price difference between the two will be reduced.

For 4K×2K LCD TVs, Semenza did not make any specific predictions. It only pointed out that such TVs “would like to use 3D TVs to solve the problem of less content if they wanted to be popularized”. He said that in the future, there is a need to develop an upsampling technology that can save 4K×2K images of CDs and full-HD images.

Semenza also talked about "Smart TV" with Internet access (DisplaySearch called Connected TV). He predicted that smart TV "is expected to reach 50% of the global TV supply by 2014", in this area, the competition aimed at improving the operational performance of voice and gestures is accelerating, but "the ideal technology is not yet available."
