Qorvo recently unveiled its latest asymmetric Doherty amplifier, the QPD2731, aimed at helping clients maximize performance when designing wireless base station equipment. This innovative GaN-on-SiC solution combines two transistors within a single package to enhance linearity, efficiency, and gain while reducing operational expenses.
Eric Higham, Director of Strategy Analytics Services, noted that GaN devices outperform other high-frequency technologies like GaAs and InP in terms of power handling. Additionally, GaN surpasses other power technologies such as LDMOS in frequency performance. Roger Hall, General Manager of Qorvo's High Performance Solutions business unit, emphasized that today’s telecommunications infrastructure must deliver cost-effective solutions. He added that their customers have expressed a need for more features, which the new GaN-on-SiC QPD2731 transistors can provide.
Due to the lower thermal performance of LDMOS and GaN-on-Si, customers are increasingly opting for GaN-SiC to boost the performance, linearity, and efficiency of their wireless base stations. The QPD2731 facilitates this shift by pre-matching discrete GaN-on-SiC high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). Currently in the sampling phase, this new amplifier offers the highest performance in the market across the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz band.
According to Qorvo's previous announcement, the QPD2731 achieves linearization through a standard, commercially available third-party digital predistortion (DPD) system. Qorvo provides a comprehensive range of gallium nitride (GaN) discrete transistor products in various power, voltage, and frequency levels, both in die and packaged formats.
