On August 8th, the Second Surface Display Gathering Forum of 2017 was jointly hosted by Samsung Display and the China Electronic Chamber of Commerce at the Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center. The event marked a significant milestone in the evolution of curved television technology. During the forum, key market data on the successful "counterattack" of curved TVs was revealed, alongside the strategic plans of major industry players. This gathering signaled the beginning of a new era for curved display technology.

The second surface display forum was held in Beijing
The forum featured the release of the "2017 China TV Market Semi-Annual Summary Report," jointly issued by the China Electronics Video Industry Association and Avid Cloud Network (AVC). According to the report, China's domestic color TV retail volume reached 21.81 million units in the first half of 2017, a 7.3% decline year-on-year. However, total retail sales increased by 4.3% to 74 billion yuan. Despite the overall downturn in the color TV market, curved TVs showed strong growth, making a notable "sales counterattack." Jia Dongsheng, General Manager of Zhongye Times Market Research Co., Ltd., noted that domestic curved TV sales rose by 47% in the first half of the year. By May 2017, the penetration rate of 48-inch and larger curved TVs exceeded 18%, with a market share of 23%. He also predicted that curved TV sales would surpass 4 million units in 2017 and reach over 6 million in 2018. Meanwhile, Zhang Shaoyong, General Manager of TCL Multimedia Product Center, shared that TCL’s curved TV sales had already exceeded 700,000 units in the previous year. These figures clearly indicate that the curved TV era has arrived and is rapidly capturing market share. The journey of curved TVs from being initially overlooked to becoming a hot topic has been a long and steady one. Looking ahead, major manufacturers are actively discussing future development strategies. They are not only exploring new technological innovations but also shaping their pricing strategies to gain a competitive edge in the market.
Curved TVs have grown explosively
At the event, Samsung showcased its latest innovation — a 65-inch Glass LGP model named “S-Curved.†This new product features an integrated module design and an ultra-thin thickness of just 4.9mm. Its most remarkable feature is the spherical surface design, which creates a futuristic visual effect. This demonstration highlighted Samsung’s vision for next-generation displays and brought the seminar to a high point. With diverse perspectives and creative ideas exchanged throughout the forum, it concluded with enthusiastic applause. Yet, the development of curved television is far from over. As technology continues to evolve, we can only wait and see how far curved TVs will go and how impressive they will become in the future.
