As a rookie with less than half a year of “creation ageâ€, although the experience is not very rich, I still want to make a staged summary, but also hope to give some help and reference to the early entrepreneurial team. There are improper places to welcome friends from the industry to help me point out and discuss and exchange ideas.
First, what kind of hardware should I do?
At present, there are many kinds of intelligent hardware, and the general direction includes wearable, smart home, etc., and there are many sub-directions below. How to choose? This is a pit that has to be made and is the biggest hardware startup. This choice will actually determine the direction of the company. If you choose the wrong one, you will miss at least half a year.
As a small startup team, choosing the door magnetic product as the entry point, we considered:
1) The pain point of the user. People, including me, who have obsessive-compulsive disorder, will be careful to forget the door and window, and smart door magnetism can solve this problem.
2) Create a hardware or intelligently transform traditional hardware. As a small team, we believe that it is easier to cut into the market and be more acceptable to users.
3) Can the team's own advantages be combined with the depth of this product? My two partners and I were responsible for smart home and wearable projects in Baidu, and have been involved in this field since the beginning of 2013, from software and hardware to cloud services. There is some experience in intelligent hardware, the magnetic function of the door is relatively simple, and we can both have hardware and software.
4) Is the first batch of access or the Red Sea, the magnetic door is traditional hardware, but the low-power WiFi door magnet, we can be the first one to be able to remotely call the police.
As a start-up team, we also considered avoiding the positive competition with big companies. So we chose to cut from the “small†hardware that is vertically subdivided, and we can compete with the big companies. In addition, the “small†products with vertical and single functions are also more It's easy to get through and do fine.
When we choose Baidu, we will mainly consider the direction of intelligent hardware:
1) What are the main competitors doing, whether it is a platform opportunity, such as WiFi, routers;
2) Expanding from your existing business is a good extension of the video service than the TV box. The cloud camera is the advantage of integrating cloud storage and video.
Of course there are other random factors, such as the boss's preferences.
Second, how deep is the hardware involved?
After selecting the hardware direction, the next important question is how to do it, how deep the hardware needs to be, depending on the product itself and the current strength of the team.
More mature hardware products, such as TV boxes and cameras, are easier to find reliable ODMs or OEMs. Hardware design, supply chain and production can be handed over to them. But new hardware products, such as our WiFi door magnets, because there are basically no ODM vendors to do similar products, this situation needs to find reliable hardware personnel to design their own.
Before we did smart home products, we basically handed out hardware-related things to our partners. The manpower was mainly invested in software and service research and development. This is appropriate for simple hardware such as small WiFi. However, for products with strong soft and hard coupling, such as intelligent routing, it relies heavily on the ability, willingness and cooperation of the partners. When a generation of products is lacking in the R&D strength of the routing hardware and systems, the quality control depends on the first The three parties, plus our basic lack of intervention in this piece, led to the inability to control the quality of the hardware, and many problems, such as Internet stability. When you are doing the second generation, you will learn the lesson and select hardware and system partners from multiple dimensions such as ability, brand, and willingness. The cooperation will be a lot smoother. It will be officially listed this month. It should be a very Nice product.
At the time, the bracelet project was responsible for my partner. At the beginning of 2013, it was a very new direction. There was no ready-made Design house.
