Wuling Hongguang MPV field leader! Even Changan is not in the eye! The most miserable is her

While everyone is familiar with SUVs, fewer people know much about MPVs. In reality, MPVs have evolved from station wagons and carry a mix of features from both cars and wagons. They offer ample space for passengers while maintaining comfort and the ability to haul cargo! Most MPVs are designed with two compartments, allowing seating for 7-8 people when fully occupied. Primarily aimed at family users, MPVs have become a popular choice for home-oriented car buyers, capturing significant attention in the domestic auto market.

From what netizens have shared about their experiences buying MPVs, most car buyers tend to focus on several key aspects: Does the design look stylish enough to make a statement? Is there sufficient interior space for both passengers and cargo? Is the driving experience comfortable? What about fuel efficiency—can it help keep running costs low? And finally, does it have enough power to handle a fully loaded vehicle? These are critical factors that determine whether an MPV meets consumer expectations.

Just like in the SUV and car sectors, the MPV market is fiercely competitive. However, compared to these other segments, the MPV market lacks the same intensity of rivalry. It's almost as if the landscape has solidified, dominated by a few familiar names. As we look back at the SUV sales rankings for the first half of 2017, it’s clear who the major players are:

No surprises here—the top two spots go to Wuling Hongguang and Baojun 730, both from SAIC-GM-Wuling. Wuling Hongguang sold an impressive 260,900 units in the first half of the year, maintaining steady monthly sales despite a slight decline over time. Its competitors couldn’t catch up, with numbers like 60,100 in January, 41,200 in February, 52,500 in March, 36,100 in April, 36,400 in May, and 34,400 in June. Baojun 730 came in second place but faced a massive gap compared to Wuling Hongguang, with a total of just 130,900 units sold in the first half of the year—still a strong performer but far behind its sibling.

Don't overlook the third spot, which belongs to Buick GL8 from SAIC-GM, with sales of 67,600 units in the first half of the year—half the sales of Baojun 730. Following closely, Changan Automobile has tried hard but remains overshadowed. Models like Changan Unoe and Changan Oulun sold 60,600 and 51,300 units, respectively, falling short of even one month’s sales for Wuling Hongguang. Changan simply couldn’t break through the dominance of SAIC-GM-Wuling.

In this crowded MPV market, the lowest performers include BYD M6 and Karry Kari, with M6 selling only 319 units and Kari managing a mere 135. Even Wuling Hongguang’s daily sales easily surpass these figures! Meanwhile, Changan’s Ouliwei and Auchan A800 also struggle, with sales of 569 and 549 units, respectively. Clearly, Changan has a long way to go to compete effectively.

The second half of the year has begun, and the competition shows no signs of letting up. Survival of the fittest will continue to shape this market. In the automotive world, this rule remains unbroken. Let’s stay tuned to see how the MPV segment evolves in the coming months!
