It takes time for 3D technology to bloom with naked eyes

In 1839, Winston West, a British scientist, discovered a wonderful phenomenon. The distance between two eyes is about 5cm. When looking at any object, the two eyes have different angles (that is, there are two angles of view). Since then, the development of 3D display technology has slowly begun.
After 171 years of development, 3D technology has been recognized by the market in 2010. In the field of terminal display, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and other internationally renowned companies as well as Changhong, Hisense, Konka, Skyworth, TCL and other domestic color TV giants have launched new 3D TVs. At present, the glasses-based 3D display technology has become the protagonist of the market, but experts believe that the naked eye technology is the future of 3D display technology.

Multiple technologies combine active and mainstream

"In fact, 3D technology is not only used in the digital entertainment industry, but also widely used in military, construction, medical and health industries." Hou Chunping, professor of the School of Electronic Information Engineering of Tianjin University, told the "China Electronics News" reporter, "The current 3D display technology There are many ways, mainly chromatic aberration type glasses, polarized glasses type, active shutter glasses type and naked eye type etc."

At present, the products introduced by various terminal manufacturers basically adopt glasses-type technology, of which active glasses technology accounts for a very large proportion. As of now, 3D TVs that are already on the market use active shutter technology.

It is understood that currently 3D glasses display technology is mainly divided into three kinds: color-type, polarized light and active shutter. Chromatic-type technology due to poor imaging results, the technology will gradually be eliminated. Both polarized and active technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages. The active shutter technology has relatively low technical requirements for the panel. The panel maker can achieve 3D display without modifying the existing panel products. However, the technical product requires the refresh rate of the panel to be above 240 Hz, and the glasses are expensive. . The cost of polarized optical glasses is very low, which can effectively solve the residual image problem of the shutter technology. However, due to the need to apply a polarizing film on the surface of the panel, the cost is high.

It is because of the above reasons that there is a huge difference between the current camp of polarized technology and active shutter technology. In the active shutter technology, currently Samsung, LGD, Sony, Panasonic, Changhong, Hisense and other companies are the main active shutter technology, its end products began to sell in the market. In polarized light technology, only AUO currently produces mass-produced panel products. There is no corresponding product in the terminal market. However, Peng Shuanglang, executive deputy general manager of AU Optronics Co., Ltd., confidently stated in an interview with a reporter from China Electronics News: “AUDA has cooperated with several color TV companies, although there are currently fewer polarized products on the market. But I am very optimistic about its future development prospects."

Short-term production of naked eye technology difficult

When visiting 3D TV stores, we often hear such a voice: “Wearing a pair of glasses will eventually give people an uncomfortable feeling.” “There are many ways to use 3D display technology, mainly chromatic aberration type glasses, polarized glasses type, Active shutter glasses and naked-eye type etc. The development direction of 3D display technology is volumetric three-dimensional technology and holographic projection technology, and naked-eye type will be the main display method for future 3D technologies.” Chairman of Tianjin Three-Dimensional Display Technology Co., Ltd. who is a professor Chang presented his opinion to the reporter of China Electronics News.

According to the reporter, naked-eye 3D technology can be divided into three types: Barrier, Lenticular Lens, and Directional Backlight. The biggest advantage of naked-eye 3D technology is to get rid of the shackles of glasses, but there are still deficiencies in terms of resolution, viewing angle, and viewing distance.

In an interview with reporters, the heads of companies such as Samsung, AUO, and TCL all pointed out: “Now naked-eye 3D TVs cannot be mass-produced.” The main reason for the difficulty in mass production of naked-eye 3D TVs is the high cost. It is reported that the larger the naked-eye TV size, the higher the cost, and the cost is a geometric progression: First, the monitor using the naked-eye 3D technology must be an industrial display, and the production process is very different from the ordinary liquid crystal display; the second is the 3D TV. Although the film is easy to manufacture, it is necessary to ensure that the "point-to-point" film has great technical problems. At present, there is no way to enter the industrial mass production stage, so the time cost for producing TV is higher.

Technological transformation is imminent

Compared with liquid crystal technology, China's 3D technology has much stronger research and development reserves. At present, Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Peking University, Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and other scientific research institutes all have their own scientific research achievements; TCL, Tianjin 3D and other companies have also started 3D technology industrialization research and development as early as a few years ago. However, how to share technology and how to achieve industrialization deserves our in-depth discussion.

First, scientific research institutes need to work closely with companies. The main reason for the lack of linkage between production, education, and research is that the research results of research institutes are out of line with industrialization. On the one hand, companies face pressure for survival. Some companies pay more attention to immediate interests and lack the overall layout of the technology chain. On the other hand, research institutes pay more attention to the research and development of frontier scientific research results and sometimes neglect the research on manufacturing processes and production processes.

Second, companies need to maintain an open mind. Companies are both competitors and partners. For the current 3D market, companies should pay more attention to the relationship between partners. Only by sharing their own technology with an open attitude, can companies together make the “cake” bigger and gain more profits.
