Asia-Pacific fiber component market will reach US$6.7 billion in 2015

Ovum predicts that the optical component market (OC) will grow by 15% in 2011, and we expect double-digit growth in the next few years. The high bandwidth requirements of core networks, access networks, and data communication networks, as well as the demand for network agility, will drive Ovum's forecasted growth. The compound annual growth rate from 2009 to 2015 is expected to be 16%, and it is expected to reach a scale of US$ 10.5 billion in 2015.

The growth of the fiber optic component market is significantly faster than that of the optical network (ON) market, and faster than all other equipment areas. Daryl Inniss, vice president and head of business, explained: “This market performance is relatively unsustainable; whether the result is that the OC market level will collapse due to excess inventory, or the ON market level will begin to expand, consume and use the original purchased originals. We believe that the latter is most likely to happen in 2011. After 2007, suppliers’ stocks have become better mastered, and since then most major OEMs have requested OC suppliers to shorten their product lead-times, from 8 to 8. With 12 weeks shortened to 4 weeks, some OEMs also requested OC suppliers to freeze their inventory. Until the products are shipped from the warehouse, OC suppliers cannot recognise revenue."

The Asia Pacific region has become the largest ON region in 2009. Ovum predicts that the Asia Pacific region will continue to lead the next five years, and by 2015 it will reach a scale of US$6.7 billion. China is the biggest growth driver in this region. Innis, an analyst in the United States, added: “The rise of India cannot be underestimated. The Indian market was virtually non-existent. Now it is challenging the status of Japan’s second largest ON market in Asia Pacific. The key to the sales of the component industry is to continuously strengthen their presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The status in the ON supply chain, whether directly dealing with telecommunication companies or maintaining good relationships with system suppliers headquartered in the region or doing business in the region."

From the point of view of the ON system, the key technology trend is to use 40G and 100G. System vendors are trying hard to provide new technologies to telecommunications companies, as well as those telecom companies that have been demanding more cost-effective bandwidth. The role of non-telecom companies, such as Google and Facebook, has also been tempted to use increasingly higher bandwidth capacity. For industry watchers who have been concerned about tracking 40G since 2000, 40G is being used "suddenly" and rapidly. This is a noteworthy phenomenon.
