Six reasons why Google TV did not achieve its expected success

Google TV has given many promises before its launch. Now it has been several months since its launch, but it seems that the product has not achieved the desired success.

Google TV is a product specially launched by the company to enter the consumer's home life. The software is currently available on Logitech Revue set-top boxes and Sony HDTVs, allowing users to view content provided by services such as Netflix via the Internet, as well as connect to networks and control DVRs on their own. On the surface, this product is an upgraded version of most other software that runs on a set-top box.

But with the end of 2010, many people claim that Google TV may be a very failed product. In fact, there are reports that Google has asked companies not to talk about Google TV products at the CES conference. In addition, there are reports that said that Logitech has been asked by the search giant to stop production of its Revue set-top box. Although these reports have not yet been confirmed, it also reflects the absolute lack of user interest in Google TV products. That is, Google's entertainment platform has already shown signs of decline in this area. The following are the specific reasons:

1. The excitement of users has passed. When Google TV was first announced, there was a clear excitement in the United States about the product that will soon be available. This makes sense. As mentioned earlier, Google TV has given more promise than any other entertainment platform solution before launch. Now that Google's TV equipment is on the shelves, all the excitement seems to have disappeared, so that some people may wonder whether the heat wave is really calming.

2. Apple TV's influence Over the years, the Apple TV business has been referred to by its CEO Steve Jobs as the company's "hobby." However, on September 1 this year, Apple introduced a new version of the device, which was officially announced at the end of the month. Recently, Apple said that its sales of Apple TV will soon reach 1 million units. This is not groundbreaking, but due to the popularity of the device, consumers are likely to switch from Sony and Logitech to Apple TV.

3. Incomplete functionality If there is one thing the internet can do for consumers, that is search. If consumers can search on the Internet TV platform, then perhaps many people think that Google TV has great potential. But currently there are not many features on the platform. The software lacks application support, some online programming cannot be accessed and so on. In addition, Logitech Revue sells for 299 US dollars, relative to its provided function, the price is high, its sales volume is also a great obstacle.

4. Apps not yet in place When Google first talked about the entertainment platform, the company said it will provide developers with software development kits that allow them to move entertainment content (and other content) to the Google TV platform. Unfortunately, these applications will not appear until next year. If these applications are available now, consumers may find it more valuable.

5. The content is king when it comes to entertainment, content is more important than anything else. Consumers hope that the products they buy will provide themselves with a certain amount of entertainment content that is of most interest to them. This is exactly what Google TV lacks. Although the platform is connected to Netflix, it still cannot access Hulu PLus. In addition, for those who want to access online video through the platform, the platform is still unable to meet their requirements. This is indeed a problem, and it may pose a threat to the success of Google TV.

6. The speed of improvement is too slow When Google first announced Google TV, it seems that the platform will have more improvements than the products currently on the market. However, when the device began to be sold and consumers had the opportunity to get the device, they quickly realized that the product was not as groundbreaking as it was supposed to be. Google did not take adequate measures to change the original concept. Over time, Google TV is likely to become a product that consumers ignore.
