One,

Purpose

When the soil is humidified, it begins to disintegrate in water. This process is critical for understanding how structured clay soils behave when exposed to moisture.

The instrument is designed to measure the rate at which a structured clay soil disintegrates in water. It plays an important role in selecting suitable soil materials for wet dam construction projects.

Two,

Reference Standard:

SL237-003 (Water Content Test)

SL237-004 (Density Test)

Three,

Operation and Test Procedure:

1. Collect undisturbed soil samples or prepare disturbed soil samples as needed. Cut the sample into a cube with a side length of 5 cm using a soil cutter.

2. Determine the moisture content and density of the sample according to SL237-003 and SL237-004 standards.

3. Place the sample in the center of the stencil, then hang the stencil under the float. Hold the front end of the float and quickly submerge the sample into the water cylinder. Start the stopwatch immediately.

4. Record the initial stable reading on the scale at the surface of the float and note the starting time.

5. After the test begins, take readings at 1, 3, 10, 60 minutes, and then at 2, 3, 4 hours, etc. At each interval, observe and record the scale reading at the water surface and describe the degree of disintegration. Adjust the time intervals based on the speed of disintegration—shorten or extend them as needed.

Four, Humidification Test Record

Project Code: Soil Sample Number: Instrument Number: Soil Sample Description:

Tester: Calculator: Checker: Test Water:

Density (g/mm²) Moisture Content (%)
Observation Time After Time
Float Reading Float Poor Reading
Disintegration Amount (%) Disintegration Years
Dbmin H.min
R R1
-R2 λ= (R1 - R2)/(100 - Rλ) × 100

Five, Results

1. The test ends when the sample fully passes through the grid. If the sample does not disintegrate significantly over time, record its condition in water.

λ = (R1 - R2) / (100 - Rλ) × 100

λ: Disintegration percentage of the sample at time t, in %

R1: Scale reading at the surface of the float at time t

R2: Initial stable reading of the scale at the surface of the float at the start of the test

Note: There is a marked water level line on the water tank. If no water level is applied, add water up to the line to prevent overflow after placing the sample and float tube inside!
