Life on the cloud is only me-TerraMaster Tieweima F4-220 NAS is out of the box

Everyone knows, jellyfish meets everyone again.

The Jellyfish was thinking about playing with the NAS when the network disk had gone all the way and the hard disk capacity of the jellyfish's computer wasn't enough.

As a true IT migrant worker, his daily tasks involve dealing with network cables, switches, servers, and computers. However, for NAS, he is still a complete beginner, having done only a little research without any in-depth understanding or use.

Why choose NAS instead of a simple disk array cabinet? Because NAS is much more powerful than a disk array cabinet. A good home NAS can do a lot: storage and backup, add Gigabit Ethernet and RAID combinations. It can also share and manage various network disks, acting as your private cloud. It supports rich applications like offline downloads, remote downloads, and even email servers.

A good home NAS product should have the following features: support for multiple protocols such as NFS, CIFS, FTP, etc., and a web interface for mobile access and management. It should also run on a system that is both beautiful and user-friendly. Low noise, compact size, and an attractive design are important, especially if it’s placed in a living room or bedroom. Big servers can be too loud, like a plane taking off, which is not ideal.

It should support multiple bays, be expandable, easy to install, functionally simple yet practical, consume low power, and maintain stability 24/7. Price should be cost-effective as well.

Unboxing:

The box was bigger than expected and felt quite heavy.

The package was very simple, with only the Weima logo on the front and some stickers.

Opening the package gave me the feeling of a small appliance. The host and accessories were separated, and the host was well protected to prevent damage during shipping.

The NAS host came with plastic protection and a Tieweima sticker seal.

The yellow sticker inside was eye-catching, showing the correct way to install the hard drives.

Accessories:

The accessories in the small paper box were very geeky—rich and thoughtful. Along with the necessary power adapter and network cable, there were screws, hard drive labels, screwdrivers, replacement pads, and extra screws.

The manual was extremely concise, perhaps the shortest I've ever seen. I thought there would be some basic instructions, but instead, I had to download the electronic version from the website.

The electronic manual requires logging in to view, which is a trend, but I wish there was a QR code or short link to guide users to it.

The power adapter is 84W, not high, suitable for 24/7 operation. It's energy-efficient and doesn’t consume much power.

Both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch screws are included.

The network cable is likely Cat 5e and of good quality.

Exterior:

The Tieweima NAS has a similar look to DAS, with a metal body that feels very premium, like a MacBook. I think it looks better than Qunhui, especially since it's meant to be placed in a living room.

A friend said it looked like a power bank, but I think it's more like a networked toaster.

The texture is amazing, and the all-metal body gives a sense of practicality. The design is simple, with active cooling at the back, and a Tieweima logo. There are four hard disk slots on the front, a power button, and an indicator light above it. There's also a blue Intel sticker on the front.

Passive heat dissipation is at the bottom, along with foot pads to help with cooling.

Two fans on the back provide active cooling. In actual use, the fan noise is much less than the hard drive itself.

There are USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, a LAN port, and a power port on the back.

Your toast is baked.

Beautiful little blue sign.

Use Experience:

The hard disk slot is different from others, using a quick-release design.

Since the National Day holiday hasn't ended, I plan to buy a few more hard drives soon. For now, I'm using my old one.

Four screws fix the hard drive, very convenient.

Installation:

Before installation, I wanted to open it up, but found a warranty sticker on the screw.

The materials are solid and well-built.

The hard drive is directly in front of the two fans, and the fan noise is minimal.

SK hynix memory chips can be seen. According to online disassembly guides, Tieweima's system is stored on a mini-USB-like device.

TOS3:

Actually, Tieweima's own TOS3 is easier to use than Qunhui, and is more suitable for beginners who are new to NAS.

The first thing you see is the Quick Installation Guide, which is the electronic version of the manual.

More detailed instructions and terms require downloading the PDF file.

Here, you can download the TANS desktop client to manage the NAS. It's available across platforms, including Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android.

You can install TOS3 on any platform, including mobile devices, without needing to know complex codes. Even with just a phone, you can complete the entire installation process.

Here, for convenience, I chose the most common PC page for TOS3 installation. First, the hard disk will be checked, taking around 5-20 minutes, similar to a computer's fast scan.

Then, I selected automatic installation. TOS3's interface is very clean and visually appealing, with a UI similar to Deepin Linux.

Everything is automatic—installation, restart, and everything else.

Use:

The electronic manual is very detailed and includes diagrams.

First, set up an administrator account and password, just like setting up a router. The password must include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and be at least 8 characters long. Security is taken seriously from the start.

Disk arrays are optional, and with only one disk, I couldn't see RAID 0.

The interface is simple and friendly, with a feel similar to Deepin and domestic routers. Of course, like Qunhui, it has left-side apps and status info in the lower right corner, being based on Linux.

Customizable options like wallpapers and themes are also available.

Hardware:

The F4-220 is similar to the F2-220 but has two more hard drive bays. It uses an Intel dual-core Celeron J1800 2.4GHz CPU and 2GB DDR3L memory. The 420-end model uses an Intel quad-core 2.0GHz CPU.

Applications:

TOS3 has a wide range of applications, including enterprise-level software like SugarCRM, MySQL server, and mail server. It can meet the needs of SMEs and supports up to 40TB and 1000+ users.

Jellyfish installed only a few applications.

Baidu Cloud synchronization is very useful and one of the main reasons I chose this NAS.

PT&PT download, also known as offline download. This is one of the most popular and practical functions in NAS, allowing direct downloads without using a PC. The advantages include lower power consumption and noise, and files can be accessed from any platform after download.

Many people might say their $100 router already has this feature. But I’ve used Xiaomi routers before, and they come with limitations like data caps and membership fees. Downloading a movie might not even finish by lunchtime.

Tieweima offers two mainstream offline download apps: Transmission and Aria2. Transmission handles PT&PT downloads, similar to Thunder, and is very easy to use. Aria2 supports Baidu Cloud and Thunder but requires internet access and more setup, so I didn’t use it.

DLNA, PLEX, and other apps were not introduced in detail. I used PLEX with R9000 for half a year, but now it's unused. The main reason is that video usage is high, and PLEX requires a monthly subscription of $5.

It's worth noting that the video surveillance storage feature is practical, but many webcams don't support ONVIF protocol.

TANS.online

Supports up to 1000+ users sharing access.

File Management:

Instead of setting IP addresses, log in as admin to create shortcuts.

It can store and manage files and supports MAC OS, Linux, iOS, and Android platforms.

APP:

The APP is simple and easy to use, mainly for file management and photo backup. It would be better if the mobile version of TOS3 could show real-time status and app activity.

Summary:

The Tieweima F4-220 network storage server is a highly practical and user-friendly product. With its outstanding design, high-quality materials, and easy-to-use TOS3 system, it stands out. Full-platform coverage and management software make it a versatile private cloud solution. While it's great to eliminate the need for a PC, I hope the APP can be enriched further. Also, I hope TOS3 continues to develop more useful and fun NAS software.
