Alibaba announced today that Dr. Zaiqing Nie, a Principal Investigator at Microsoft Research Asia, and Dr. Mingyang Li, a former Technical Director at Google’s Tango and DayDream projects, have joined the Alibaba Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Labs). Dr. Nie will serve as the General Manager of the Beijing R&D Center of AI Labs, while Dr. Li will lead machine vision research within the lab.

According to reports, Dr. Nie previously worked at Microsoft Research Asia, where he led research in natural language understanding and entity mining. On October 10th and 11th, Alibaba officially launched the “Dharma Institute,†a bold initiative aimed at conducting fundamental scientific research and exploring disruptive technologies. Jack Ma announced a commitment of over 10 billion yuan for the Dharma Institute over the next three years. He also expressed the ambition for the Dharma Institute to surpass major global labs like Microsoft and Google in the future.
