Dharma Institute AI field has opened its doors, Microsoft Google experts have joined Ali

At the inception of the Alibaba Institute, Jack Ma emphasized the importance of China developing its own artificial intelligence research institution. He once stated that the Dharma Institute would not only grow but also outlast Alibaba itself. Recently, the Alidar House has welcomed two new senior leaders, signaling a promising future for the Dharma Institute. Alibaba announced today that Dr. Nie Zaiqing, a principal investigator at Microsoft Research Asia, and Dr. Li Mingyang, former technical director at Google’s Tango and DayDream projects, have joined the Alibaba AI Labs. Dr. Nie will lead the Beijing R&D Center, while Dr. Li will focus on machine vision research within the lab. His work contributed to key products like Bing, Office, and Cortana. Now, he will concentrate on knowledge mapping and natural language processing at the Beijing R&D Center. His expertise lies in visual-inertial odometry (VIO) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), with over 20 top-tier papers and patents in the field. At Google, he focused on multi-sensor fusion and SLAM, driving both theoretical breakthroughs and real-world applications. In early October, Alibaba officially launched the “Dharma Institute,” a strategic initiative aimed at advancing fundamental science and disruptive technology. Jack Ma announced a commitment of over 10 billion yuan in investment over the next three years, emphasizing that the Dharma Institute should eventually surpass leading labs like Microsoft and Google. Industry observers see this as the first major step following the establishment of the Dharma Institute. The addition of Dr. Nie and Dr. Li suggests a clear direction for AI Labs, potentially expanding into visual interaction and even robotic AI products. Beyond the voice-based Tmall Xianer, future offerings may include more advanced AI-driven solutions, marking a bold move into the next era of intelligent technology.
