IDC: Storage Software Market Increases 10% in the Fourth Quarter of 2010

On March 8th, Beijing time, according to foreign media reports, the storage software market once again achieved a good year-on-year growth in sales. This is the fifth growth, mainly due to the top five manufacturers in the industry in the fourth quarter of 2010. The sales volume has increased. According to statistics from IDC, in the fourth quarter of 2010, the total value of the market was 3.4 billion US dollars, an increase of 10.6% over the same period in 2009.

The largest manufacturer is EMC. Its revenue in storage software reached US$866 million, an increase of 18% from last year. Symantec ranked second with revenue of US$543 million, an increase of only 0.1%. The halt of Symantec made IBM narrow its gap with it, but the gap between the two companies is still relatively large. IBM ranked third, with revenues of US$443 million. NetApp ranked fourth with revenue of $312 million. Hitachi ranked fifth with US$148 million. However, Hitachi’s growth rate was the highest, reaching 47%. IDC also said that in 2010 the market's total revenue increased by 10.3% to 12.7 billion US dollars.

Eric Sheppard, IDC's director of storage software program research, said the market is still in recovery. New product innovations and strong demand for storing, protecting and managing corporate data have stimulated the market.

The largest growth rate in the entire market was storage architecture software with a growth rate of 23.6%. The data protection and recovery market remains the largest of these, with a market value of US$4.4 billion, accounting for more than a third of the entire software storage industry.
