In 2017, the home 4K projector market experienced significant growth. Sony introduced a more affordable 4K model, the VPL-VW268, but its price still reached nearly 40,000 yuan, making it out of reach for most consumers. However, in the Full HD segment, Sony launched the VPL-HW48, which earned the nickname "Million-Yuan God Machine." As an entry-level home projector from Sony, the VPL-HW48 is not a 4K model, yet it was rated by Projector Central as "the industry's highest level professional home theater projector below $2,000." After a two-week trial, we’re here to share our experience with this machine.
When you first open the box, you’ll find that the VPL-HW48 isn’t small. Its dimensions are 407.4 x 179.2 x 463.9 mm, and it weighs 9 kg. Compared to the 4K model VPL-VW268, which measures 495.6 x 195.3 x 463.6 mm and weighs 14 kg, the VPL-HW48 is only slightly smaller, yet it still feels very professional in appearance.
Many users install projectors in dedicated home theaters, but some also place them in living rooms. To suit such environments, Sony released the VPL-HW48, offering a more modern and stylish design. The 2017 4K models even came in white versions, showing a trend toward more elegant options for home use.
The VPL-HW48 features a physical resolution of 1080P (1920x1080) and 1800 lumens of brightness. While this may seem low, it’s suitable for darker environments. It supports 3D and uses three 0.61-inch SXRD panels, which offer better color brightness and eliminate rainbow effects compared to single-chip DLP technology. This makes it ideal for those sensitive to visual artifacts.
Despite its advantages, the 3-chip SXRD system requires precise alignment to ensure accurate color overlap, which can affect sharpness and color accuracy if not properly calibrated. The manual zoom lens offers a 1.6x zoom ratio, allowing for larger images at closer distances, a feature often seen in professional projectors.
With a projection range of 40 to 300 inches, the VPL-HW48 is versatile for different setups. The right side of the unit houses buttons and menus, while the front has air vents that don't require extra space on the wall, helping increase the projection distance.
The remote control is full-featured, allowing quick adjustments to brightness, contrast, and other settings. The VPL-HW48 also includes eight preset color modes and one user mode, making it easy to customize for different viewing preferences.
One standout feature is its improved optical engine, which enhances performance in ambient light. When using the "Bright Movie" or "Bright TV" mode, the image becomes brighter and more visible in well-lit rooms, though black levels may be slightly less deep than in movie mode.
The Motionflow function helps smooth motion by inserting additional frames between original ones, reducing blur. Users can choose between "True Cinema" mode for a cinematic 24fps experience or higher frame rates for smoother motion.
Testing showed that the VPL-HW48 delivers sharp details and accurate color reproduction. Even without 4K resolution, it produces clear lines and realistic textures. In video tests, it outperformed lower-cost DLP models in color depth and clarity, especially in scenes with complex lighting and colors.
For gaming, the VPL-HW48 boasts extremely low input lag, making it ideal for fast-paced games like football simulations. The visuals remain smooth and responsive, though high-speed action may occasionally show minor motion blur due to limitations in interpolation algorithms.
In terms of heat and noise, the VPL-HW48 performs admirably. After running a 1080P video for over an hour, the outlet temperature was around 34.2°C, which is impressive for winter conditions. The fan noise is minimal, almost whisper-like, making it ideal for quiet environments.
Although the VPL-HW48 is priced above 10,000 yuan, its performance justifies the cost. With vibrant colors, excellent detail, and strong contrast, it delivers a premium home theater experience. If you enjoy watching movies with curtains drawn, the VPL-HW48 will definitely meet your expectations.
