The new national standard for water purification industry will be officially implemented in November 2018.

In recent years, an increasing number of households have opted to purchase and install water purifiers, driven by growing concerns over water quality. In China alone, there are now over 5,000 brands in the water purification market. However, the lack of clear industry standards has led to a highly competitive and chaotic market, where product quality varies significantly and marketing claims often exaggerate the actual performance of these devices. This inconsistency has raised doubts among consumers, who struggle to distinguish between genuine high-quality products and low-cost imitations. Some insiders have revealed that even relatively expensive water purifiers can be made with very cheap components. For instance, a filter that costs just a few yuan—such as a melt-blown filter priced at 1.8 yuan or a compressed activated carbon filter at 3 yuan—can be found inside units sold for thousands of yuan. Additionally, some manufacturers do not even hold the necessary hygiene and safety certifications for drinking water products, further undermining consumer trust. The root cause of this disorder lies in the low entry barriers within the industry and the absence of comprehensive national regulations. To address this, China has taken a significant step forward by introducing its first mandatory national standard for the water purification industry. The GB34914-2017 “Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier Water Efficiency Limit Value and Water Efficiency Rating” was officially released by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the National Standards Committee. This standard, which came into effect in November 2018, sets strict limits on water efficiency, aiming to improve overall industry quality and sustainability. Under the new standard, reverse osmosis water purifiers that produce less than 35% purified water will be considered non-compliant. This regulation is expected to eliminate inefficient and low-quality models, encouraging manufacturers to invest in more advanced technology and better performance. Moreover, the revised Standardization Law, effective from January 1, 2018, requires companies to clearly state the names and numbers of both mandatory and recommended standards. This measure is designed to ensure transparency and enforce compliance across the industry. As a result, water purifier manufacturers are now under pressure to innovate and enhance their products’ efficiency and reliability. The introduction of this standard is expected to bring about long-term positive changes, helping to clean up the market and restore consumer confidence. With stricter regulations and higher performance expectations, the water purification industry is gradually moving toward a more professional and sustainable future.
