Bulk density determination method: Bulk density (Ïb) is the mass of the powder divided by the volume of the container it occupies. This measurement is also known as bulk density, and it is calculated as Ïb = W/V.
When the powder is filled into a container using a regular vibration or tapping, the resulting density is called the tap density (ÏBt). The tap density represents the maximum packing density achieved under controlled external forces.
The determination process involves filling the powder into a measuring container. The volume measured includes not only the actual volume of the particles but also the voids between them and within the particles. As a result, factors such as the shape and size of the container, the speed at which the material is filled, and the filling technique all influence the final volume.
The density measured without applying any external force is referred to as the loosest bulk density. On the other hand, when external force is applied to compress the powder into its densest state, the resulting density is known as the tapped density. The number of taps affects the final value, and the tapped density reaches its minimum volume when further tapping no longer changes the volume.
In practice, this is done by carefully weighing the powder and placing it into a graduated cylinder, then gently tapping the cylinder to settle the powder. The final volume is recorded, and the density is calculated as weight divided by volume (w/v). It’s important to avoid breaking or damaging the cylinder during this process.
