The first TD single-chip commercial mobile game cost

The terminal bottleneck has always been a major obstacle to the development of TD-SCDMA standard China Mobile to develop 3G. However, the high power consumption and high cost of the TD smart chip are also one of the bottlenecks.

On February 24, chip maker Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL) and Asustek jointly launched a series of TD-SCDMA smart phones for the mass market. This is the first commercial TD-SCDMA single-chip solution. These handsets all support China Mobile’s latest Ophone mobile operating system.

According to Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, adopting a single-chip solution will help reduce the cost of TD handsets. It is a major factor for market maturity. “There are so many good handsets in the market. The use of a single chip greatly reduces the cost and integrates a variety of mobile phone functions in the chip, resulting in great success in the 2G market.

"We have been discussing whether it is possible in the 3G era that we also have such an integrated chip in TD-SCDMA handsets, which will allow handset manufacturers to reduce costs, be able to make handsets smaller, and make functions even better. The price is more reasonable, said Wang Jianzhou.

In fact, as early as two or three years ago, China Mobile began to require related companies to carry out research and development, and in-depth cooperation with Marvell began in 2008. In September 2009, Marvell first introduced a single-chip solution based on TD-SCDMA.

According to Marvell co-founder Dai Weili, "At that time they gave us a request, that is, how to reduce the cost of the chip, and now it has initially reached the standard of lowering to 1,000 yuan (mobile phone price)."

Dai Weili said that cooperation with Asustek is just a beginning. In the future, it will cooperate with more and more OEM manufacturers to launch single-chip smart machines. “The cost of the chip will be even lower after the volume is increased in the future.” Dai Weili believes that the TD smartphone product below $1,000 is entirely possible. “If the cost of the LCD screen can be controlled, there is no problem from a chip point of view.”

According to report, when Marvell and ASUS took the lead in launching commercial products, other chip makers have also proposed TD single-chip solutions, but no official products are available yet. Industry insiders expect that Marvell and Asustek may be able to help them win more orders because the move is now undergoing a new round of TD terminal bidding.

China Mobile's bidding procurement online information shows that following last year's TD-SCDMA low-end handsets centralized procurement, China Mobile recently started a new round of centralized procurement of high-end TD-SCDMA smartphones.

In the “G3 high-end mobile phone” project, China Mobile plans to purchase approximately 12.2 million high-end G3 mobile phones. There are about 1.5 million flagship Internet terminals, about 300,000 dual-card dual-standby terminals, about 3.2 million multimedia intelligent terminals, 4 million fashionable entertainment terminals, and about 3.2 million universal smart terminals.

Dai Weili said that due to government support and the factors promoted by China Mobile, he believes that "TD-SCDMA smart opportunities are widely sold in China." At the same time, she is also optimistic about the development of TD-TLE. "This three-year cooperation with mobile in TD-SCDMA is the foundation and will continue to expand cooperation in LTE in the future."
