According to Tesla's estimates, the second quarter of 2017, the Model 3 battery cell will begin production. By 2018, the Super Factory will produce 35 gigawatt-hour lithium-ion batteries each year, close to the sum of all other lithium battery production in the world.
At present, Tesla's super factory is not fully built. It is understood that the super factory has adopted a phased construction method, so Tesla, Panasonic and other partners can start production in the completed area and then continue to expand.
To date, the building has reached 1.9 million square feet and operates a total of 4.9 million square feet of space. Although the completion of the project is still less than 30% of the total area, once completed, the super factory is expected to become the world's largest building.
Tesla said that the use of the super factory will also create more jobs for the United States. "In 2017 alone, Tesla and Panasonic will employ thousands of local employees. The super factory will employ approximately 6,500 people directly during the peak season and indirectly create 20,000 to 30,000 jobs in the surrounding areas."
