GE will work with Apple to develop smart lighting homes

On the morning of May 5, GE announced on Monday that it will work with Qualcomm and Apple to leverage digital technology and market interest in big data to drive the recovery of the lighting business.

Through a partnership with Qualcomm, GE will help retailers connect shoppers' smartphones with technology embedded in LED bulbs. This "indoor positioning" technology will be able to send customized coupons based on the location of the shopper in the store.

General Electric also said it will develop LED bulbs that are compatible with Apple's connected device platform HomeKit. The light color of this bulb can be adjusted according to the human condition.

These collaborations show that GE plans to enter the interconnected lighting market, which has just emerged in recent years but is already highly competitive. This type of connected lighting product can be connected to a smartphone.

Beth Comstock, head of GE's business innovation, said GE has seen an opportunity to sell energy-efficient LED bulbs. The company is also trying to use sensors and other technologies embedded in LED bulbs to help consumers, businesses and cities.

GE's services will generate additional revenue and help the company cope with market pressures as the LED bulb business becomes cheaper. Comstock said: "At present, the flow of data from lighting brings opportunities to increase productivity."

General Electric is undergoing restructuring. Some analysts speculate that GE may split the lighting sector. Last year, the company sold its home appliance business, while companies such as Siemens and Philips also split their lighting business. General Electric's lighting business generated revenue of approximately $2.5 billion last year, accounting for 2.3% of the company's total industrial sales.

Comstock said the lighting business is in line with General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt's philosophy of integrating software and data analytics services into multiple industrial devices. GE called this concept "Industrial Internet."

Combstock said: "Integrating LED bulbs with software will help GE continue to expand the industrial Internet market. So I think the lighting business will play a major role in the future development of GE."

Navigant Research analyst Jesse Foote said that in addition to traditional lighting manufacturers, the "smart lighting" market has attracted industrial equipment manufacturers in other areas such as Honeywell, as well as a number of lighting control companies. Start-up companies. He said: "There are a variety of companies coming to this market."
