Marvell enters LED lighting to achieve deep light adjustment technology breakthrough

On February 26th, the 2012 industry and technology outlook media symposium was held in Shenzhen. Representatives from famous companies such as Freescale, ADI, Fujitsu, and Marvell participated in the symposium, which attracted many industry media and participated in the current hot spot. The topic was visited on the spot.

Lance Zheng, Marvell's senior manager of global technology marketing, shared a brilliant sharing of intelligent LED solutions for the mass market, analyzed how the entire intelligent LED lighting platform improved system energy efficiency, and explained the LED driver IC 88EM8183 with advanced deep dimming technology. The world's first dual-channel smart LED driver chip 88EM8801 in the new smart platform application.

Many experts in the industry believe that the “blowout” period of the LED market has arrived, the rapid development of global LED technology, the upgrading of the lighting industry, the rapid increase in product performance, and the reduction in production costs all make LEDs more and more rapidly cut into all areas of lighting. As China, the European Union and other countries have banned the sale of incandescent lamps since 2012, the LED lighting market, which represents green lighting, has finally started. Recently, orders from some LED manufacturers have been increasing. “We expect LED lighting will blowout in 2013.” Lance Zheng said, “Now, the price of LED chips is declining by 20% per year. By 2015, the price of 1000 lumen LED chips will drop to around US$1. By then, the cost of the entire LED lighting will be reduced to around US$3. There is a competitive advantage."

In the field of LED lighting, almost all analog semiconductor companies have long been laid out. As a latecomer, Marvell naturally has its own unique skills. This unique skill is its breakthrough deep-dimming technology. Lance introduced that Marvell adopts a mixed signal architecture and advanced technology. Dimming control technology smoothly achieves deep dimming with LED currents as low as 1%, compared to similar LED driver solutions that typically achieve only 10% to 20% dimming. "We have a DSP core in our solution, which uses an advanced dimming control algorithm that complies with the NEMA SSL 6 dimming standard," Lance emphasized.

Another important factor affecting LED dimming is the compatibility of dimming channels. In response, Marvell's strategy is to do compatibility testing with dimming in various markets as far as possible. “We have collected major tune around the world. Optoelectronics products have been dimmed and tested one by one, and more than 100 types have been tested so far. Basically (TRIAC) wall dimmers are compatible.” In addition, OTP is also integrated in Marvell's solution, allowing manufacturers to Fine-tune according to the characteristics of the dimmer to adapt to the characteristics of the dimmer.

Another feature of the 88EM8183 deep dimming solution introduced by Marvell is the significant reduction in the number of peripheral devices. In the on-site protocol comparison, it can be seen that the peripheral devices of the Marvell solution are the fewest, and that other solutions are used for smaller electrolysis. Capacitance, claiming to help lighting manufacturers can reduce system costs by 40%! In addition can adapt to a variety of external dimensions LED lights, such as A19, PAR, BR, GU10 and Candle, etc. and will not damage the dimming performance. "At present, our solution also uses electrolytic capacitors because the electroless solution may cause flickering in dimming. We also provide non-electrolytic capacitor designs in non-dimming solutions."

In fact, Marvell also worked closely with Lutron, the leader in the lighting control industry. A large number of tests were performed on the pre-production chip reference design, which was also certified by Lutron.

In comparison with the two most popular dimming solutions, we have seen that Marvell's solution has advantages in terms of efficiency, PFC and harmonic distortion (THD). "Some American power companies will have less solutions to harmonic distortion. With subsidies, the THD is small, and it also virtually saves customers' costs,” he said.

Currently, wireless dimming has gradually been heated up by LED lighting. For this, Marvell has also launched a solution that supports zigbee wireless dimming, which can be easily dimmed with Android smart phones. Marvell provides Zigbee/WiFi gateway software and Zigbee network protocol stack. It is convenient for customers to build wireless dimming systems. This wireless dimming system was also demonstrated at this year's CES.

In addition, Marvell also introduced a two-channel drive scheme, the 88EM8801, which incorporates four high-power MOSFETs, an I2C interface, and an one-time-programmable (OTP) memory block to accurately and efficiently control the current of each LED string. This is achieved by writing calibration and compensation data in advance in the OTP memory or by dimming control signals via the PWM and I2C interfaces to achieve the target optical specifications. This solution is also highly integrated, eliminating the need for most external components such as MOSFETs and rectifier diodes, saving bill of materials (BOM) costs and board space. In addition, the 88EM8801 is equipped with a dual-channel synchronous rectified buck topology that provides up to 95% efficiency.

"In the current LED solutions, many light sources are in the blue + phosphor mode. Our dual channel is the blue + red mode. The advantage of this mode is that it can mix and control different color LEDs and achieve a high color display index. (CRI) and the number of lumens per watt. In addition, the phosphor pattern will be affected by temperature, causing LED lamp stability problems, and we also made an automatic compensation circuit." Lance said, "However, because some LED chip manufacturers such as Osram, CREE and others have patents on mixed light. Therefore, lighting manufacturers should pay attention to avoiding some patent risks when implementing the program."

The 2012 Industry and Technology Outlook Media Seminar was organized jointly by Shenzhen Yiweixun Information Consulting Co., Ltd. Based on the status quo of global industrial technology development, the conference explored the path that China's new energy industry is facing and provided authoritative reference research and viewpoints to the industry. The conference was a complete success.
