When to use radar sensors for vehicle detection

A radar sensor detects the train within the tunnel.

In our ongoing series on vehicle detection technologies, we've explored various methods and their practical applications. Among these, radar sensors stand out for their reliability in detecting vehicles under a wide range of conditions. This makes them an excellent choice for asset management, site safety, traffic control, and resource planning.

This article focuses on when and how radar sensors can be effectively used for vehicle detection, along with their key advantages that make them a preferred solution in many scenarios.

What is a radar sensor?

Radar sensors utilize Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology to accurately detect both moving and stationary objects, such as cars, trucks, trains, and cargo, even in extreme weather conditions like rain, fog, and snow.

Advantages of radar sensors for vehicle detection

1. Long-range detection
Radar sensors are ideal for outdoor environments where long-distance detection is required. They can be configured to focus on specific ranges, ignoring irrelevant objects beyond the set threshold, which enhances accuracy and reduces false positives.

2. Weather resistance
Unlike photoelectric or ultrasonic sensors, radar is not affected by environmental factors such as wind, rain, fog, dust, or temperature changes. This makes it highly reliable for outdoor use, especially in challenging environments like tunnels or loading docks.

3. Flexible installation
Radar sensors offer greater flexibility in installation. They don’t need to be mounted directly on tracks, making them safer and easier to maintain compared to other technologies. This also reduces the risk of damage from high-impact forces, such as those encountered by trains passing through tunnels.

Important note

While radar sensors are powerful, they may struggle with small targets, especially when there's little space between vehicles. Therefore, they are commonly used to detect large, predictable objects like train cars, where accuracy and consistency are essential.
