Japan built the world’s first hydrogen power municipal power supply facility

On the 10th, a hydrogen power generation facility jointly developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and the Dalin Group, a major construction company, was completed in Kobe City. This marks the world's first hydrogen power plant designed to supply both electricity and heat to municipal facilities, setting a new benchmark for clean energy innovation. The facility is located on an artificial island in Kobe Port, covering approximately 3,700 square meters. Key components include a hydrogen storage tank and a large gas turbine. The power generation system can operate using a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas, or solely with hydrogen, producing up to 1.7 megawatts of electricity. It is scheduled to start operations in early January 2018, with the generated electricity and heat primarily allocated to nearby hospitals, sports centers, and four other municipal buildings. Hydrogen is gaining significant attention as a clean energy source because it produces no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases when burned. In line with this, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has set a goal for all power plants to incorporate hydrogen generation by around 2030. This project in Kobe represents a crucial step toward achieving that vision, demonstrating how hydrogen can play a central role in a sustainable energy future. With growing global focus on decarbonization, initiatives like this are not only helping Japan move closer to its environmental targets but also serving as a model for other countries looking to adopt hydrogen technology on a larger scale.
