Renault is making significant progress in integrating machine learning into its automotive technology. According to the company’s AI engineers, this innovation marks a crucial step toward fully autonomous driving. The goal is to allow vehicles to autonomously navigate to a nearby garage for repairs without any human involvement. This development could revolutionize how people interact with their cars, shifting from active driving to passive travel. Maggie Mhanna, a data scientist at Renault Digital, explained that the company is already gathering extensive data on electric vehicles. They are storing information about when specific parts need replacement in a separate database. By combining these datasets, they aim to predict key maintenance events, such as battery replacements, with greater accuracy. This advancement is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry. RethinkX, a leading think tank, predicts that once full autonomy is legally recognized, the public will increasingly prefer self-driving vehicles within the next decade. In this future scenario, passengers will no longer need to drive; instead, their vehicles will handle everything, from navigation to maintenance. For example, if a car detects an issue, it could automatically drive itself to the nearest service center and request the necessary repairs. Future models may even be capable of performing basic self-repairs. Renault’s Zoe, an electric vehicle, is one of the platforms where researchers are testing AI systems to estimate when batteries and other components might need replacement. The Renault data system works by collecting usage patterns from electric vehicles. This includes data on trip distances, battery temperatures during charging, external weather conditions, and energy consumption. By analyzing these metrics, the team can determine the battery’s health and predict potential failures up to a month in advance. Although electric vehicle batteries are designed to last a long time—Elon Musk has mentioned that Tesla’s lab test vehicles have exceeded 500,000 miles—this requires extensive data collection over time. Renault’s research team is working diligently to gather enough information to refine their predictive models and improve the reliability of their autonomous systems.
