Orders from China affect sales growth of global industrial robots

According to Reuters, The InternaTIonal Federa TIon of RoboTIcs (IFR) said on Wednesday that global industrial robot sales increased by only 12% in 2015 due to a sharp decline in orders from China.

This figure is lower than the global industrial robot sales growth rate of 29% in 2014, but higher than the 8% forecast previously given by IFR.

Sales of industrial robots in China fell from 56% in 2014 to 17% in 2015. At present, China still hopes to achieve more automated production due to rising wages and a low level of robots and workers.

Last year, the world sold a total of 248,000 industrial robots, and China accounted for more than a quarter.

IFR said that the growth of industrial robot sales is driven by emerging automation countries and the highly developed countries.

Sales of industrial robots in Mexico more than doubled, mainly because the global automotive industry has invested heavily in building factories in the country to facilitate the sale of cars to the United States and South America.

The Chinese market is still dominated by foreign robot manufacturers, but IFR said that China's domestic robot manufacturers are gradually developing, and its market share has increased from 25% in 2013 to 31% in 2015.

Most Chinese manufacturers still manufacture low-end and mid-range industrial robots, but they are committed to improving their own levels.

China’s home appliance maker Midea has launched a takeover offer to German industrial robot Kuka last week.

IFR said that European industrial robot sales increased by 10%, Germany played a leading role, the Americas increased by 15%, but the United States only increased by 3%, Asia increased by 16%.

South Korea is the second largest robot market in the world, second only to China, followed by Japan, the United States and Germany. These five countries account for three-quarters of the sales of industrial robots.

The automotive industry is still the largest buyer of robots, with more than one-third of total sales, but only 1%.

The industries with the fastest growth in robots are metal, plastic, rubber and electronics. (Li Lu)
