According to reports, Rambus said today that they have completed the integration of lighting technology development company GLT, and has begun to operate LED business.
Rambus purchased 84 of GLT's 84 patents on LCD and LED backlights in November last year. 12 employees including GLT co-founder Jeff Parker switched to Rambus, and Jeff Parker will lead the newly established lighting technology division. Chris Pickett, President of GLT's Administrative Licensing Department, will also serve as Senior Director in the department.
Marc McConnaughey, vice president of strategic research and development at Rambus Lighting and Display Technologies, said that Rambus can integrate LEDs with existing technologies to develop the LCD TV market.
McConnaughey said that with MicroLens light extraction technology, Rambus can reduce the number of LED chips for 46-inch LCD TVs from the current 360 to 150, while increasing brightness and widening the viewing angle.
In addition, Rambus' roll-to-roll process reduces the cost of light guides for 46-inch LCD TVs from the previous $30 to $20.
Rambus currently offers LEDs for 1-70-inch display products, and they plan to enter the lighting market in the future.
