LSI Logic recently announced the Domino[X]TM architecture, a multi-stream, multi-format, high-definition media processor architecture. The Domino[X] architecture focuses on providing the ideal balance between quality, performance and flexibility, providing a cost-effective architecture for next-generation digital media applications. Details of the architecture will be discussed and demonstrated on Wednesday (October 11th) at the InStat Microprocessor Forum and related podcasts in San Jose, USA.According to research firm InStat: advanced DVD recorders, HD set-top boxes, Blu-ray/HD-DVD players and recorders, integrated digital TV iDTV, professional content creation and advertising facilities, and other digital media products are expected to reach 36 billion in 2010 Dollar.
InStat's senior analyst Michelle Abraham said: "Next-generation applications offer new opportunities for the professional and consumer electronics markets, especially for companies that are well versed in media processing and service in these markets, such as LSI; and, for manufacturers, this It is also a significant opportunity. However, the complexity of technology and market requires a mature chip solution based on platform architecture such as Domino [X]."
The electronics industry is facing compelling transitions: from analog to digital, from standard definition to high definition video, from MPEG-2 to H.264/VC-1, the development of end products is becoming more complex. Consumer electronics and professional equipment manufacturers need a flexible, scalable media processor solution that bridges different formats and provides interoperability across multiple electronic products.
In response to these challenges, LSI introduced the Domino [X] multi-core media processor architecture. The architecture is flexible and provides enough scalability to target high-performance professional-grade codec solutions and low-cost consumer electronics. One of the key advantages of the Domino[X] architecture is multi-format encoding, decoding, and digital video transcoding, enabling content to be converted and re-formatted to accommodate a wide range of products: from mobile to HDTV HDTV. The Domino[X] architecture handles multi-stream digital video, including:
• Dual HD decoding
• Dual SD encoding + SD decoding
• HD encoding + SD decoding
• HD to HD transcoding
Transcoding between H.264 HD and MPEG-2 HD is especially important for bridging the previous generation and next generation digital video equipment.
Tim Vehling, vice president of marketing for LSI Logic's Consumer Electronics Group, said: "The Domino [X] architecture is built on LSI's proven media processing technology and products for more than a decade, enabling us to offer our customers highly integrated solutions and unique features. The functionality of the Domino [X] platform is designed to enable high-quality solutions with an ideal cost and performance balance for a wide range of applications in the extended digital world."
The features and benefits of the Domino[X] architecture include:
• Mixed software and hardware methods to make products and performance flexible;
• Robust software reduces product development risk and system cost;
• DV, MPEG-1/2/4, H.264 and VC-1 video compression standards, encoding, decoding and transcoding of relevant audio standards to provide interoperability and backward compatibility between products;
• Transcrypting ensures content sharing while maintaining the copyright of content owners;
• Patented DVFXTM technology for high quality video.
The Domino[X] architecture is based on our years of experience in providing professional-grade, Emmy-winning video compression technology. Products based on the previous generation DoMiNo® architecture will complement Domino [X]'s new product line. The DoMiNo solution was adopted by NASA to broadcast high-definition quality images from space; the solution has been widely used in the broadcast facility market and will continue to be deployed in Motorola's set-top boxes and a range of leading consumer electronics companies such as LG, Panasonic and Philips.
